Online Consultations

Online consultations are another option to have a collaborative session with engaged feedback from a consultant about a digital project. We use simultaneous screen-sharing, through Google Meet, and microphones to have a conversation with a student or faculty member about their work. The Digital ACT Studio is committed to meeting designers where they are in a project. However, with online sessions, it might be more useful to have a product to discuss, rather than for brainstorming purposes.

Online Consultation Process

In DACTS, we try to make it as easy as possible to have an online consultation. These are the general steps to follow to have an online consultation.

  1. First, make an appointment with the Digital ACT Studio, and ensure that you’ve selected “Online” as opposed to face-to-face.
  2. Before your consultation, get yourself ready by being in a quiet place with a reliable internet connection, access to email, and ready to use your computer’s webcam and microphone.
  3. Just before your consultation, your consultant will invite you to a Google Meet session. (Google Meet is part of your iSpartan Google Apps.)
  4. Join the Meet session to begin your consultation. You can screen share during the session with the “Present Now” button.
  5. After the session, please fill out a post-consultation survey at go.uncg.edu/MLCsurvey.

If Something Goes Wrong

Although Google Meet consultations are fairly simple, sometimes technical issues do occur. We always recommend trying the Google Meet interface on your own at some point before your consultation, just so you are familiar with its layout. You can access it in your iSpartan Google Apps as “Meet” or simply log into your UNCG account and then go to meet.google.com and start a new meeting. You’ll also be able to see if your microphone and camera are working this way. You can find Google’s official Meet support and help information at https://support.google.com/meet.

If you’re trying to have a consultation and are running into issues, you can also call the Digital ACT Studio at (336) 334-5616 for immediate assistance. Often, we can resolve issues over the phone. You can also email digitalactstudio@uncg.edu with any questions or concerns you may have.
